Virtually Green
There's a lot of talk these days in marketing circles about "green business" practices and marketing. Being green isn't just about recycling, it's about nurturing, growing things, instead of just using them. In fact, being green has as much to do with purpose and people as it does plastic and paper ... The beauty of this somewhat expanded view is that even the smallest business can do this and make a meaningful difference." - Jackie Alan Giuliano, PhD
"Green is quite a buzzword today and we should spend a few minutes thinking about what makes a business green. The intention is for it to instill confidence, to make you feel that the business, product, or practice is good for the environment, safe for the planet, and basically will do no harm." - John Jantsch
"Operating a green business is not only good for the environment but good for business's bottom line because conserving resources and cutting down on waste saves money ... Recycling is the first thing that comes to mind when we think of being environmentally friendly. And recycling is important. But recycling is only one part of the environmentally friendly business equation. We can also take a large step towards being more environmentally friendly by reducing the amounts of waste in our offices and business operations." - Susan Ward, about.com
Key Realty subscribes to the following from the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade's Greening Operations guides:
- Turning off equipment when it's not being used.
- Encouraging communications by email, and read email messages onscreen.
- Reducing fax-related paper waste by using a fax-modem and by using a fax cover sheet only when necessary.
- Producing double-sided documents whenever possible.
- Finding a supply of paper with maximum available recycled content.
- Choosing suppliers who take back packaging for reuse.
- Instigating an ongoing search for "greener" products and services in the local community.
- Seeing if existing office furniture can be refurbished. It's less expensive than buying new and better for the environment.
